Seasons and Sidewalks
“Seasons and Sidewalks”
This is a digital series I’d been wanting to do for a long time.
I got into running as a teenager, and even though I don’t always run regularly now, going for walks (or bike rides, or hikes) has been a very essential part of day to day life. It is a chance to escape, to breathe, to clear the head, to move, to feel the blood pumping again. Regular walks, even if not on a hiking trail where I would most like to be, have been a treasured means of stress relief throughout every up and down. I’ve never been able to understand why people use exercise equipment like treadmills. Part of the point of exercise (in my opinion) is to get OUT, to fully change one’s surroundings and stimulate every sense. Smelling the air, feeling the breeze, the ground, noticing shapes, colors and textures, hearing birds and squirrels, the crunch of leaves.
The intricate and subtle textures of sidewalks are something I started to notice. After art school and learning various digital techniques, I wanted to create a set of work layering photographs of the sidewalk. The series kept getting put off, for various reasons. After getting married this past spring, and moving 1,300 miles away to a completely new place, where I pretty much only knew my husband and his parents, the series was that much more important to me to do. Going for walks is now a part of familiarizing myself with my new surroundings – trying create a new feeling of “home”. I decided that the photographs I take and use for these pieces should be more than just the concrete, but all manner of details and observations (I particularly like where nature interacts with man-made structures).
I hope you enjoy this series, and I will be adding to it each month as the seasons progress. If you are interested in owning a print, just head over HERE.
